Title: USB Connection Issues with Windows Mobile Device Center on Windows 11
🔍 Issue Summary
Users have reported USB connection failures when using Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) on Windows 11 systems. The issue mirrors earlier problems seen in Windows 10 (1703 and 1709 updates), where WMDC would freeze on the green splash screen or fail to launch entirely after connecting a handheld device.
💻 Affected Devices
- SKF Microlog Analyzer
⚠️ Symptoms
- WMDC hangs on the green splash screen
- WMDC closes unexpectedly after device connection
- Device not recognized via USB
🧪 Root Cause
Windows 11 introduces enhanced security policies and service permission changes, similar to those in Windows 10 Creators Updates. These changes disrupt WMDC’s ability to communicate with connected devices.
🛠️ Workaround for Windows 11
Step 1: Modify Windows Services
- Open Services via: Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services
- Locate and edit the following services:
- Windows Mobile 2003-based device connectivity
- Windows Mobile-based device connectivity
- For each service:
- Right-click → Properties
- Go to Log On tab
- Select Local System Account
- Ensure “Allow service to interact with desktop” is unchecked
- Click Apply, then OK
- Restart the both the service
- If these 2 services cannot be found in the Services list, then you must reinstall Windows Mobile Device Center from the link below. Once the 2 services are in the Services list, then you can go back to steps B and C above:
(NOTE: Click on the Files tab, then choose the appropriate download, either 32 bit or 64 bit)
Step 2: Reconnect Device
- Plug in the USB cable for your SKF handheld device
- WMDC should now launch and connect successfully
📝 Additional Notes for SKF Microlog Inspector Users
You may need to edit registry keys specific to your device to fully restore functionality. Contact SKF support for detailed guidance.
Note:- For Microlog CMXA 75/80, These devices can be upgraded to latest Firmware 4.06 and can be used with new SKF Sync driver (Serial Over USB) to get rid of WMDC with Windows 10 & 11.
